A recent study indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
